Tonight I find myself on our patio enjoying the gentle hiss of the sprinklers watering the lawn. Prior to owning a home, I never thought this would be something I enjoy.
As a child, I would took away with my grandmother in here flower garden making sure everything was trimmed and the weeds were gone. I didn’t realize until I was older the joy she had in doing this work I sometimes only did because she asked.
Grandma loved her flowers and wanted them to look the best for anyone who might find beauty in them. Whether a visitor, a neighbor, or a granddaughter.
Now at 28, I find myself working through our yard find joy.
As a child, we work and do our chores because we feel like we *have* to do them. When we get older, we might feel this way too, but I’ve found that I enjoy doing these things. Mowing the lawn on a hot Saturday morning or pulling weeds on a Tuesday evening might not be the most enjoyable thing to do. However, instead of having to do these things, I get to do these.
On Saturday morning, I get work along side my husband trimming our grass and finding pride and joy in knowing we have a place to call home and the ability to take care of it ourselves.
On Tuesday evenings, I’m transported back to the moments as a child my grandmother taught me what was a weed and how to trim the flowers at a 45 degree angle (way before I knew what a 45 degree angle was).
Tonight as I sit outside (making sure our sprinklers work) in the mist of the water and under the light from the street lamp, I find gratitude. Gratitude for what I have been blessed with and for the ability I have and what I can share with friends and family.
I hope that as you finish your day you think back on what you were able to do today and find joy in it. Or as you start your day tomorrow you make an effort to find joy in what you do.
